Firewall Hardware
The size of the network does not matter; network security is the biggest concern for network administrators. Large companies usually do not
deal with these issues themselves but rather rely on security specialists to maintain and secure their local intranet. It is very important that
whoever is taking responsibility for securing the network have the complete knowledge to do so.
In other words because of the intricate detail involved with setting up and securing these systems, the administrator must completely
understand how they function. If the firewalls are not configured precisely it could result in people not being able to access information that
they need and people who are supposed to get specific information may not be able to access it.
Hardware firewalls are something that can be purchased alone but more recently they are automatically placed in broadband routers. For anyone
on a broadband connection a hardware firewall has to play a very significant role in the set up of your system and your network setup. Hardware
firewalls are very effective and are fairly maintenance free, meaning that they require little or no configuration.
Usually every hardware firewall will offer at least four network ports allowing connection to other computers. A hardware firewall depends on
packet filtering to audit the header of the packet in order to resolve where it came from and where it is going. Then this information is
observed and compared against some predefined rules that determine if it will be allowed through or aborted.
The truth of the matter is that basically anyone can plug in a firewall with barely any effort and have it work but unfortunately for optimal
security the effort does not end there. The hardware firewall has to be configured for maximum security and protection. You will have to at least
acquire enough basic skill to test the firewall and make sure that it is providing you with maximum security.
A bit of important advice is that you should always read all of the paperwork that comes with your hardware firewall because not all firewalls
are the same. You can also visit the manufacturer’s website and gather additional knowledge if necessary. Sometimes the terminology can be a bit
challenging but the manual and the Web site really will help you understand it better.
You should always test your hardware firewall security and to do this you can either buy third party testing software or look online for a
free testing service.
When it comes to hardware firewalls versus software firewalls, one is not necessarily better than another but it is true that a hardware
firewall will give you the best degree of protection.
A hardware firewall is a small metal box that has ample ports. You hook your computer network into the box and then set it up on your
computer, similar to how you would a printer or a scanner. For the most part, hardware firewalls are usually owned by larger businesses and
corporations.
Hardware firewalls are best when used by larger networks such as those employed by bigger businesses and corporations. It is the home users
that normally opt for the software firewalls because they are much easier to customize.
