The Internet is compromised of hackers that use malicious codes such as viruses, worms, and Trojan horses and they seek computers that are not protected. Using a firewall will protect your computer from these types of attacks. If these hackers get to your unprotected computer and attack they will attempt to install programs that you do not want.

These are the programs that cause hundreds of pop ups to invade your computer screen, some may even be offensive. They can also automatically redirect you to websites that you never intended on visiting and these programs can also monitor everything that you type into your computer and then send off to hackers that will be looking to seek your credit card numbers and bank details.

There are firewalls that are available for download or depending on the version of Windows that you are using, they may have one built in. While it is true that firewalls will not protect you from everything there is no arguing that they are a very big help indeed.

Free firewalls are everywhere and places like Microsoft give them away free with their operating systems. Also, many high speed Internet users offer free anti virus protection for subscribers.

There are also several websites that offer free firewalls and some Internet providers are offering packages where they include free firewalls, anti-virus, anti-spyware, and other security tools.

Some security is better than no security, this is true but some consumers who are installing these free firewalls are finding that they are left with a false sense of security and they may not even know it until it is too late. All the while they believe that they are fully protected but in fact they were never protected at all.

When you compare freeware to what is often called Pro versions or paid firewalls, both programs quarantine suspicious e-mail attachments; both can totally block network activity, and both include the handy toolbar. Many times what you will find is one version of a free firewall being offered but the same company will offer you a better firewall for a fee.

The free firewalls are good as long as you configure them correctly and make sure that you update everything that requires an update. In the long run this will keep you nice and safe and allow you maximum protection for your computer.

Look into whether or not your Internet carrier offers free firewall protection and if they do then use it.
