Home Computer Networking
Probably the very first question that you need to address when it comes to computer networks is if you have a need for one. You are likely
used to sharing files already but probably use such things as floppy disks or USB keys to do so.
Home computer networking allows you to share these files much faster and so much easier just by using the connections that are already
available between the computers.
The sharing does not stop there either as you can also share such things as printers, scanners, and even the Internet connection itself.
Networking also opens up a whole new arena for such applications as multi player online games.
The same benefits are present regardless if you choose wireless or a wired home network but if at all possible consider the wireless approach
instead for the following reasons, computer mobility which means that you are not bound to one area and you will have much more mobility. There
will be no unsightly wiring hanging around which can really be annoying.
Plus you will already be where everyone else plans to be in the near future. Clearly the future of networking is in wireless technology and
having already done so will allow you to take advances in technology a lot quicker.
Evaluate your needs before you rush out and start buying a lot of what could be unnecessary hardware. First, where is all of the equipment
that you will be connecting? Where are your computer, your printer, and any other devices that you might want to include?
Try to make a design of how you want this to look or work out for you, even if the image is just in your head, have some direction.
Also make sure that all of your gear is compatible. If you want to share Internet access then make sure that you factor this into your plan
along with two other very important factors, reach and speed. Is it possible that you may want to upgrade in the future?
Will you be purchasing any other computers within the next few years? If so then factor those in because networking two computers is a bit
different than networking more.
While you are engaged in or simply contemplating the home computer network idea do not drown in "what if" issues. There is plenty of help
available so do not panic.
There is enough information available to easily explain to you what such things as traditional hubs, switches, routers, or wireless gear and
whether or not you need any of them.
You can also gather information on assembling what you need and making it a functioning network and how to configure it to maximize its
potential. Be prepared to have the information available in the following areas: how many computers do you need to network, do you have any
mobile computers, what operating systems are you running on your computer, what type of Internet service do you have, what are your plans on how
you will use your home network, and where will your computers be located?
Knowing these things will make things much easier once you get started with your home computer network venture.
